We can't say there's been a shortage of laptop-to-TV streaming solutions in the last few months -- ASUS has its, HP its and BriteView its -- but we've got one major complaint about them all: the large size of the transmitter. As you've probably heard us whine about before, each of those products requires a fairly chunky box be attached to the laptop itself via both HDMI and USB.
But it's looking like it won't be that way for too long -- AMIMON, the company behind that WHDI technology, has engineered the WHDI Stick. The picture above is a clear sign of its prototype status, but the company's created the 3.2 x 1.2 x.61-inch device to really let the world, or at least manufacturers, know that it's shrunk down the package, but hasn't messed with the features -- it can still stream uncompressed 1080p/60Hz HD from a laptop to an HDTV with minimal (less than one millisecond) latency. We're planning to check it out in action at this week, but AMIMON doesn't expect products based on the prototype to hit the market until the end of Q1 2011.
Hit the break for the press release and the gallery below for some more pictures of the Stick. AMIMON Unveils the WHDI Stick for Easy Wireless PC to TV Connectivity Compact WHDI Stick Wirelessly Brings All PC and Tablet Content and Games to the HDTV Santa Clara, Calif. & Tokyo, Japan – October 5, 2010 – AMIMON, the market leader in wireless HDTV semiconductor solutions announced today the WHDI Stick™. The WHDI Stick is a new product design that showcases the slim PC-to-TV products that CE manufacturers will bring to market in 2011. The WHDI Stick products will be offered as a transmitter-receiver set; WHDI Stick transmitters will be also offered separately. Based on AMIMON's AMN2120 WHDI Tx IC, the WHDI Stick products will be compliant with the WHDI™ (Wireless Home Digital Interface™) standard. The WHDI Stick enables users to wirelessly view all of their tablet or notebook/netbook content on their TVs without the limitations of other solutions.
With virtually no latency (less than one millisecond) users can now play their PC games and interactive content on the 'big screen.' In addition to all other content, WHDI security and HDCP 2.0 copy protection allow the WHDI Stick to bring Blu-Ray movies and other copy-protected content to the HDTV.
The WHDI Stick is a true plug-n-play product, no installation is needed and it is OS independent. The WHDI Stick is the smallest WHDI product design to date. The 3.2x1.18x.61 inch (81.3x29.9x15.5 mm) transmitter plugs in directly to the HDMI port of the notebook/netbook and is powered by the USB port. The WHDI Stick will transmit the PC screen directly to TVs embedded with WHDI or to any TV using a WHDI receiver adapter that connects to the TV via HDMI. 'The WHDI Stick showcases the advantages of WHDI: high image quality, low latency, low power and low cost, all in one compact design,' said Uri Kanonich senior director of product management for AMIMON. 'WHDI is the only technology that can enable such a small adapter that allows consumers to view and experience all of their PC content on their TV with perfect picture quality and no-latency.' AMIMON will be demonstrating the WHDI Stick at the CEATEC consumer electronics show in Tokyo, Japan.
