WriterDuet has great features, but I find the workspace area a little cluttered and distracting. Still, it's probably the best of the free screenwriting software out there.
I like the Celtx setup more, but its formatting is wonky and it doesn't produce great-looking pdfs. That's a deal-breaker for me. The final pdf HAS to look professional, and with Celtx, they don't.
Amazon Storywriter is simple and intuitive and I enjoyed writing in it--the simplicity was better for me, personally, for creating. That said, it doesn't have the features that WriterDuet does.
I think for me it's the scrollbar on the side of the script, rather than the side of the window (if that makes sense). It makes it feel cluttered to me and distracts me while I'm writing. (Notice I keep saying 'to me' and 'for me,' because I realize that it's not something everyone is going to have an issue with!) Plus, I really like a wider script while writing.
(If it's possible to make the script itself take up more real estate on screen, I'd love to know!) I've tried full screen, but I have a huge monitor and the amount of space to the left and right of the script distracts me. I'm not knocking WriterDuet at all. I recently made the switch to it from Final Draft and don't regret it whatsoever! It's really awesome that you're so responsive to users! The scrollbar on the left would definitely be obnoxious. I meant its position right by the edge of the script, instead of the edge of the browser window.
It puts the scrollbar in your line of sight while writing, but I'm sure it's something I'll get used to as I use WD more. While messing with the settings, I realized that I was overlooking the most basic thing: ctrl plus +. That zooms the whole page and lets you make the script section as big (or small) as you want. It works perfectly with the text zoom option under view. TL:DR WriterDuet or Afterwriting. As mentioned in this thread, WriterDuet is probably your best bet for free, but you have to be online to use it.
Other options would be to write in Fountain syntax and use any text editor. When you're ready, you could can convert to screenplay format using WriterDuet.
To learn more about Fountain syntax, check out. If you're on Windows, another offline free software is Afterwriting. They have an online version, which you write in Fountain and click a button and shows you what it looks like in screenplay format. The author makes it available for offline use too, for free.
